Goodreads Summary

Voices in sixteen-year-old Annabelle Scott’s head aren’t God or signs she’s going mad—yet. Despite being a Mech Warrior recruit, she rebels against her female-dominated rĂ©gime by not only refusing to kill Morgan, a handsome boy she’s attracted to, but also helping him escape.

Annabelle’s commander gives her auditory implants and contact cameras for an undercover assignment to investigate her corrupt police captain. Morgan hacks the implants to plead for her help in freeing his brother. As a pawn in a bigger game, she wants to help Morgan yet needs to discover the link between an attempted assassination of her adoptive mom, her police captain, and the geek institute that holds Morgan’s brother. Can she do so without falling into a trap that could destroy her family and get her killed?

I won. I lost. I'm out. I'm in. I cannot tell a soul. It was enough to spin my head, to make me wish I was back in that zoo of a high school I just left.

The Good

So imagine my surprise when I go to write the review only to find out this wasn't the first book in the series. Needless to say this book works well all on its own. There were a few parts that had me looking for a bit of back story but not to the point where I thought there was another book or two. I for one love mechs and power armor. The whole female society where males live in the outlands and are arrested for being male was a fun twist. Annabelle is a heroine you can root for and sympathize for. She can kick some major butt yet at the same time is pretty vulnerable.

The Bad

I kind of wish there was more action involving the mechs. I went in with an expectation to see more of them in the series but they were more window dressing than anything else.

The Romance

Forbidden attractions. Can our heroine like a boy when they are against the rules? Particularly when she's only met one and that was during a battle to the death.

Conclusion

Honestly I enjoyed it thinking it was the first book in a series. Now I need to go read the earlier bookand see what I missed. I'm excited to see where this series will lead and so far I'm happy 2 books in (book 2 is normally my make or break book in a series.) So needless to say I recommend this to any one that enjoys a strong but vulnerable heroine protagonist.

Excerpts

At least I hoped it was a path. Unable to see much, I was too busy avoiding rocks and branches to se my wrist-com night-vision. This is nuts. I should have hidden and taken my chances, but with their infrared, they would have caught me.

"No, please. I had no choice. I --"
Her head exploded. Blood and brains splattered the curb, and my right arm. Her eyes rolled back; she stopped panting. I could barely breathe, let alone move. I'd never watched someone die before, not this close.

"We need clear-cut victories. Today doesn't cut it. The whole point was to embarrass the Mech Corps. And here, one of theirs captured that boy! We need to plug the leak. We can't afford more screw-ups. The next mission has to be clean. Do you hear me?"
