Sidekick Saturday [27] - Unlucky

Sidekick Saturday
Sidekick Saturday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted here by Jaclyn at JC's Book Haven. There are many secondary characters that are as great as the primaries. In some cases, the sidekicks actually steal the show and you like them better than the heroine or hero. Maybe they didn't have enough page time for how great they were. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Choose a sidekick *or someone other than the hero or heroine* that you would like to put in the spotlight that fits in this week's type
• Share a picture (if possible) and information about the character
• Give the title and author of a book the character can be found in
• Please don't include too many spoilers when describing why the character is such a great sidekick
• Put your link in the Linky thing and comment

This week is Unlucky

My choice is Miranda
The Shadow Falls Series by C.C. Hunter

Miranda picture created by Jaclyn Canada

Miranda is a dyslexic witch who befriends Kylie and Della at the Shadow Falls Camp. She's their roomie and often gets into cute bicker-matches with Della. The reason that I like her so much is because of her flaws. Since she is dyslexic, she is often mixing up her spells. She has a frog that pops up out of nowhere and she turned Kylie's cat into a skunk. She gets so frustrated with her mistakes, but really they are what make her who she is. Also, she is not so lucky in the love department. She thinks she's making the right choices, and he thinks he's making the right choices, and they just aren't meeting in the middle.

Quotes:

“Wow," Miranda said, "You'd better be careful Della. In the last few days, I think you've used up your vampire quota of apologies for the next ten years."

"Kiss my apologetic ass!" Della snapped.

Friday morning, Kylie, Miranda, and Della, each carting suitcases, walked the trail to meet up with their  parents. They walked slowly, like condemned prisoners moving to their executions.
“I’m going to be peeing on a drug test stick every hour,” Della muttered.
Miranda sighed. “I’m going to screw up at my competition and my mom is going to give me up for adoption.”
“I’m going to a ghost hunt,” Kylie added. Both girls looked at her.
“Don’t ask.”

“Take some very deep breaths," Miranda said. "Relax. Concentrate. Then envision a frosty six-pack and wiggle your pinky."
A frosty six-pack. Kylie inhaled. She held out her pinky, and right then Della chimed in. "We are talking a six-pack of soda, not a cold guy with good-looking abs, right?"

There was a strange kind of sizzle in the air. And suddenly appearing in front of the refrigerator was a shirtless, shivering guy with great abs. His blue eyes studied the three of them in complete bafflement.

"What the...!" he muttered.
Kylie gasped.
Miranda giggled.
Della snorted with laughter.

  1. I have never heard of this series, but I actually like that there is a character with dyslexia! My two youngest children have dyslexia, and it's really hard to deal with some days, but they manage :)
I love your drawing too, I wish I could make my own, but that's just not in the cards for me ;) when my daughter asked me to draw a dog for her (she was 4 at the time) I did, then she looked at me, rolled her eyes and said 'oh mom, that's not a dog, that's a cow'
Have a beautiful day Jaclyn :) Thanks for hosting this awesome meme!

  2. This is definitely a YA paranormal series, so it's a read when you are ready for some teen angst, but I feel like you would enjoy Della and Miranda quite a bit. They are some strong side characters, plus the magic and the plot really are interesting.

  3. Right that pinky! It reminded me of Elizabeth's nose twitch in Bewitched. Thanks for the remark on the drawing - this one was way more difficult with her multi-color hair, and I still don't feel like I quite got her. I like the dyslexia too. I have a friend that has it...it's actually a pretty common thing. I'd be a super clumsy witch too so don't feel bad :D Thank you so much for stopping by!

  4. Right - it's very frustrating for the people that have it. I like that she has it as well...I think a lot of people will relate. Thank you too for the comment on my drawing :D As I told Robyn, this one was pretty difficult for me for her multi-color hair. I do really enjoy drawing these though. Have a fantastic weekend, and thank you so much for participating with us :D I'm so glad you enjoy side characters as much as I do!

  5. I'm not posting my sidekicks, but I did talk about it with my mom and sister. My mom drew a complete blank. Unlucky is hard! My sister chose Kelly Meding again, but the way she described it, I totally agreed with her, I chose Jason Stackhouse from the Sookie universe. He starts out pretty early being a murder suspect, and the hits keep coming after that.

  7. Ah, I have not read this series yet. (although, the books are sitting on my shelf *sign*) From the sounds of it, I should get on this series. :) Love the quotes!! Miranda sounds like a great choice, Jaclyn!

Hope your weekend is going well!

  9. Thank you! The only description of looks we get is that she has black, green, and pink hair :D I hope you enjoy it when you get to it. It's a fun series with good paranormal aspects so anytime you are in the mood for a good YA series, I'd give it a go. Thank you so much for stopping by!

  12. I love your choice! And the drawing is great. Miranda and Della sold the series for me. You're right about the unlucky part. She just couldn't get her spells straight. That little pinky of hers is a dangerous thing! Oh, the skunk. A dang skunk! I think it's so awesome that C.C. Hunter included a character with dyslexia. If I was a witch with powers, I'd be just as clumsy with my spells. As it is, an entire class of preschoolers learned their letters wonky for the few weeks I volunteered.
