Sidekick Saturday [17] - Love to Hate

Sidekick Saturday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted here by Jaclyn at JC's Book Haven. There are many secondary characters that are as great as the primaries. In some cases, the sidekicks actually steal the show and you like them better than the heroine or hero. Maybe they didn't have enough page time for how great they were. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Choose a sidekick *or someone other than the hero or heroine* that you would like to put in the spotlight that fits in this week's type
• Share a picture and information about the character
• Give the title and author of a book the character can be found in
• Please don't include too many spoilers when describing why the character is such a great sidekick
• Put your link in the Linky thing and comment

This week is Love to Hate

My choice is Monica Morrell from Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine

Monica Morrell picture created by Jaclyn Canada
I met Monica Morrell - the Queen of Mean in this series - in the very first chapter when she throws Claire's clothes down the dumpster and then she and her friends manage to push Claire down the stairs. She always has cronies around her and is the daughter of the Mayor. Rich, beautiful, and hard for the boys to ignore, she is very hard to picture because she changes her hair color quite often from blonde to deep brunette. This girl has a side of psychotic to her...breaking out a lighter to burn Claire at times and setting houses on fire. Not only is she twisted, but she also has no idea why anyone would dislike her. Over the series, she has a lot of character revelations that I enjoy. There are moments when she is vulnerable and dependent on Claire who she had previously tormented. What can I say, I love to hate her!

Quotes:

“You really pissed me off, fish. I don’t forget things like that. Neither does my boyfriend.”
“Brandon? Jeez, at least get one with a pulse!”

“Don't diss me, Danvers. I'm warning you."
"I'm not dissing you," Claire sighed. "I'm ignoring you. There's a difference. Dissing you implies I think you're actually important.”

“I’m really looking forward to a future as a second assistant fry wrangler at the Dairy Queen, and decomposing in some ditch before I’m thirty.”

Monica: "Or what, you'll bleed on me, Emo Princess of Freakdomonia?"
Claire: "Fine. You come with us. If you get in my way, I'll kill you.”

“Hi!" Monica said brightly. "Got plans today, Claire? I was thinking we could hang."
That's it, Claire thought. I'm dreaming. Only this is a nightmare, right? Monica pretending to be my friend? Definitely a nightmare.

"Trust me," Monica said. "You need somebody in the know. Somebody to show you the ropes."
If the only other person on the planet was Jack the Ripper, Claire would have trusted him first. "Sorry," she said. "I have plans. But - thank you. Some other time." She shut the door on Monica's surprised face, then locked it.

  2. Monica is perfect for this. She's awful. It's been interesting watching her evolve, yet remain fairly evil! I especially loved the book where she was chased down by the whole town.

  3. Right! Yet she still tried to boss Claire around so Claire told her where she could shove it and go back out there to the mob if she wanted. She has had a lot of growth, yet still remained her at the core. It's fairly strange, but I love it. Thank you so much for stopping by!
