Sunday Cover Scramble [124]

Let's have some fun! I am going to post covers on here every Sunday that are scrambled up graphically, making it hard to tell what cover it is. I would like your guesses on what cover you think I've posted. I won't answer you until I'm posting the next one to let you know if you are right, allowing others to guess as well. Some will be hard, and others may be easy. Let me know in the comments if you'd like some more hints and I'll offer some more if no one guesses it correctly.

If you had to use one, which unforgivable curse do you use?

Oh this is one of those that I really wouldn't want to do either.

Since we saw the destruction wrought from the Cruciatus curse done to the Longbottom family and the hurt that left behind for Neville, I definitely wouldn't want any part of that.

I also wouldn't want to kill anyone.

I pick the Imperius curse. At least I could have that argument in my head to fall back on that I would 'only be controlling someone for the greater good'. I also know that I wouldn't make anyone do anything horrendous. Yep, I'd go with the safe one that hopefully wouldn't leave as much of a lasting scar.

Which unforgivable curse would you choose?

Which Death Eater would you be?

Truth is, I wouldn't want to be any of the Death Eaters.

Bellatrix Lestrange is certifiably insane and hungry for blood.
Lucius Malfoy thinks he's better than everyone else, but in actuality is a coward.
Peter Pettigrew is a no-spine-having coward that betrays those closest to him.
Fenrir Greyback viciously attacks children, turning them to werewolves.

The list goes on and on, but what they all appear to have in common is:
1) no regard for other's lives
2) putting themselves before anyone else
3) cowardliness

There are 2 among the Death Eaters that have exceptionally good qualities. Snape works on the side of good, deep uncover with the Death Eaters and Voldemort. I do not envy his life at all so I would not want it. He is constantly living a lie and only one man really knows him. All the good people accuse him of being bad and all the bad accuse him of not being bad enough. He continuously saved Harry and kept that up even to his last breath. He was so full of bitterness and resentment though for living this life and never getting the love and child that he wanted for himself. So while he is my favorite Death Eater, I wouldn't really want to be him at all.

Regulus Black on the other hand learned later what Voldemort was planning and did what he could to act against him. He turned to the side of good at the end and tried to help in a way that he could with the locket. However, he is dead.

So if I had to choose one, I'd either be Snape or Black.

Which Death Eater would you be?

Review: Cold Hearted (Yancy Lazarus #2) by James A. Hunter

Published: May 22nd 2015 by Amazon Digital Services
Genre: paranormal/Urban Fantasy
Format: ebook
Source: provided for honest review
Goodreads Summary

Why me? Why couldn’t I ever just keep my head down and mind my own friggin’ business? I felt like kicking my own ass for being such a gullible, softhearted mook.

Shit, the least I could do was be a little more selective. Tell people I’d only do them favors if the location was somewhere nice and beautiful … like say, sunny, sandy, not-cold-as-balls Honolulu.

Shit, the least I could do was be a little more selective. Tell people I’d only do them favors if the location was somewhere nice and beautiful … like say, sunny, sandy, not-cold-as-balls Honolulu.

The Good

This is one of my favorite environments. I love the Hub where all the magical creatures go to pass from one dimension/world to another. Yancy has my type of good guy personality. He’ll kill if he has to but he tries not to. Well until you piss him off then all bets are off. Cold Hearted, just like Strange Magic has new creatures for me discover that are different from the usual vampire/werewolf story. I love that magic has a cost and no one is exempt from that cost.

The Romance

We get introduced to Agent Ferraro who at first just pisses Yancy off, but then slowly wins him over. Of course he kind of pisses her off as well since she thinks he’s a serial killer.

Conclusion

I may like Cold Hearted even more then Strange Magic. Bring on book 3 ASAP. Action, humor and romance coupled with a well-developed world and exciting storyline. What more can I ask for?

Excerpts

We wily human folk might be outgunned in the magic and muscle department, but damn if we aren’t tricksy little hobbitses.  Maybe I couldn’t kill this glorified snowstorm, but he’d be feeling the burn for a good long while.  Score one for team awesomesauce.

I didn’t have time for fear, though, this wasn’t the place to let myself be scared. No, this was the time for action, brainless heroics, and adrenaline. Lots of adrenaline. I could have nightmares later

I shrugged again. “People see what they want to see, and ignore everything else, I guess. In the West, we believe in science, we believe in the rational— and this”— I flashed a hand across the window—“ is not rational, this is not science. So people make excuses not to believe. But yeah, you’re right, shit’s crazier than a friggin’ psych ward.”

“Fairy Land?” She shook her head and pinched the bridge of her nose. “Always something new with you. Yes. Yes— if Fairy Land is where we have to go to apprehend Shelton, then I’m on board. Though, I swear, if we run into a unicorn I’m done.”
“Me too,” I said. “Unicorns are the worst. Half of ‘em are downright evil sons of bitches and the other half are all cynical jackasses.”

I, Yancy Lazarus, had minions. I’m the guy who always gets stuck fighting minions, always; the shoe had never been on the other foot before and it felt pretty badass. I wanted to scream something appropriately melodramatic, like maybe: Go forth my doom beasts, slay my foes … Bwahahaha. I didn’t, of course, because how embarrassing and tacky would that be— but it was still really cool.

You have to battle a dragon in the Tri-Wizard Tournament. Which is it?

I know which one it won't be right off the bat...I'm not facing that Hungarian Horntail! With her spiked tail and ability to shoot fire over 40 feet, she's one I want to stay far away from.

The Chinese Fireball has very large females that are fast and clever.

The Swedish Short Snout has fire that reduces bones to ashes.

I will absolutely have to go with the Common Welsh Green. It's the one that shoots fire in narrow jets and mostly avoids interaction with humans. I'm going the easy way out when it comes to facing dragons.

Which dragon would you choose to face?

ARC Review: The Fifth House (The Only City Left #2) by Andy Goldman

Published: May 11th 2015
Genre: dystopian, science fiction
Format: ebook
Source: provided for honest review
Goodreads Summary

Allin Arcady searches for his lost love. Tyena Branch struggles to scavenge enough food to keep her mother and herself alive. And in the cat city of Pudlington, the uneasy truce between humans and felines is already faltering.

Into this turmoil enters the true power behind Doyle Arcady’s reign... The Fifth House.

I jammed my palm against my forehead, doing my best to soothe the anger building inside me. “You mobby piece of trash,” I said, only half-succeeding.

“The wolves killed for sport, burned down villages, tore families apart, and you’re upset because the party’s over?” I shoved him so that he tripped over one of his friends and fell onto his butt. “Get out of my sight. All of you. You’re not welcome in this sector anymore.”

The Good

Nice! More adventure time with Allin and Tumble. More action and even more were creatures. Plus, we get to learn more about the fifth house and what their deal is. Allin is doing all he can to find Tyena while she is doing everything she can to not be found. We also get the chance to visit another cat city.

The Bad

Nothing worth pointing a finger at.

The Romance

Allin loves Tyena but she hides from him thinking he hates her. She’s worried that they want to find her for being forced to serve his Uncle Doyle.

Conclusion

I really enjoyed this 2nd book in the series. Just as good as the first and it really built upon the first book. It felt like the same book in a good way. More creepy critters and monsters are introduced plus we get to see why the fifth house is so cocky. If you’ve read the first one or just need a new series to start, The Only City Left and The Fifth House are well worth it.

Excerpts

“I know he’s looking for you and that you don’t want to be found.
I know when he found me he was yelling your name while the Garden burned down around him.
I don’t know what’s so special about you that he hasn’t given up on finding you yet, but I’ll chalk that up to his general stubbornness,”
“The same old patterns,” Tumble said. “Even without their powers, they want it to be cat versus wolf.
And now some of them might be inside the city and we don’t even know it.”

I frowned. “So how do we get out of here without letting anyone know?”
Chuckling, Tumble replied, “Emperors like to keep secrets, Allin. My brother was no exception.
Officially, he had no mate, no children. Unofficially, he needed a trysting spot, one completely hidden from prying eyes. Not even an unused room in one of the scrapers would do.”
“You’re taking me to Banshee’s love nest?” I asked, mouth hanging open.

“The Fifth House isn’t a charity and we don’t accept just anyone who signs up. We need those who have proven themselves to us. That is why we bring war and destruction to Earth.  It’s all a test to see who is worthy."

Who would you take to the Yule Ball?

I had absolutely no idea how to answer this question so I took an online quiz. I'm obviously way older than the students at Hogwarts so I needed a little outside help.

Dean takes you!

How he asks you:
You were walking down the corridor to Arythmancy when you felt someone tap you on the shoulder. You turned around and saw Dean smiling.
"What have you got?" he asks you.
"Arythmancy...the same as you, Dean." you answer him.
"Ah...right...of course..." he starts fidgeting nervously. "Can we walk together then?"
"Yeah, sure." you chuckle at him and then walk off down the corridor to your Arythmancy class.
"So...I was wondering...are you going to the Yule Ball?" he asks nervously.
"Yeah, you?"
"Yeah...you going with anyone?"
"Well, no...not really. You?"
"Nope...would you...er...would you want to go with me?" he bites his lip.
"Go to the Ball with you?"
Dean nodds at you.
"I'd love to." you beam up at him.
"Really?" he looks very relieved.
"Really." you chuckle.
"Great." Dean beams at you and then puts his arm around you as you walk through to your Arythmancy class.

The story is a bit cheesy, but hey it was a fun little quiz. It's funny that it's Dean since I love to draw.
