Harry Potter Moment of the Week [70]

If you could change one thing in book 1 what would it be?

This is a tough choice. If the first one wasn't fantastic, the hordes of rabid fans would never have continued reading through the series.

Every little bit of the first one was an introduction to these fascinating characters and the world in which Harry is thrust into.

My least favorite part of the book is Quirrell. The focus is off him during the story and Snape is spotlighted as the bad guy. Obviously he had an incredible mind or else he wouldn't have been the only one to find Voldemort. I feel that the 'good' side who didn't believe Voldemort was gone would have been searching as well to end him for good. What happens though is that by the time we do find out what was happening with Quirrell, it's hard to believe he would be good at being bad. This stuttering fool found Voldemort and helped hatch this plan to get the Sorcerer's stone? It seems far-fetched. Believe me I love that as readers we have no clue who the bad guy is, but I do wish that we would've gotten some insight into his intelligence and despicable nature other than the conversation with him at the end. That way we wouldn't have thought he was the bad guy, but at least better believed him capable of it.

What would you change?

  1. It WOULD have been nice to get more insight into Quirrell, his motivations and his actual personality too^^ Apparently, someone said on Leah's post that there is more information about him on PotterMore now so I bet it's available online somewheres too but when you're reading the books, he really doesn't seem like the kind of guy who could pull it all off!

  2. I thought the first book was too short! I would have more of everything and everyone, lol :)

I love this idea. I always thought Quirrell was a bit of a blindside to the reader. It would be cool if we got more information about him. More scenes where we get to see Quirrell being intelligent and not a stuttering mess.

  4. great GREAT point. If I could change one thing it would probably be more...of course it was perfect, but I remember desperately needing more when it was finished!

  5. I remember how surprised I was to find out that Quirrell had been helping Voldemort all along. I'd be interested to read that additional info about him that Micheline mentioned because he ended up having such a key role in Sorcerer's Stone.

  6. I kind of agree with you. Quirrell could have used a bit more character development. What I would change though is probably the length of the book. With Harry Potter books, the longer the better 'cause these books are just so good :D

  7. Oh that's fantastic! I will definitely have to check that out. I would love to know more about him. I need to catch up on Pottermore anyway, and what better month to do it?

  11. Absolutely would have loved it to be longer! There's no such thing as too much HP.

  12. That's a great point! I didn't like Quirrel as a villain, either, he was so un-villainy! But yeah, I guess it makes sense that the least obvious person did it?

I would change that mirror episode, as I wrote in my review, I really disliked it. I would have cheerfully skipped it! :)
