Harry Potter Moment of the Week [37]

This is a meme hosted by Uncorked Thoughts. The aim of this meme is to share with fellow bloggers a character, spell, chapter, object or quote from the books/ films/ J. K. Rowling herself or anything Potter related! She is picking a topic within HP for us to focus on each week and then if anyone wants to take part feel free! All she asks is to link back to her blog :). There is now a full list of the topics to come here.

If there was one thing you could change about Harry Potter, what would it be?

That's a double-edged sword. Harry has flaws. He can have a short fuse. He falls into depressions that he won't let others help him out of. He is arrogant at times, thinking he's indestructible at others. He can become obsessed with one particular problem, and overlook everything else around him. He can be a bit too trusting. He can completely ignore reason and logic. He is stubborn and impatient. He could also work a little harder in school.

The thing is, these character traits are what make him believable. They are what makes us fall in love with him and feel like we know him inside and out. It's what causes us to feel like we are in his thoughts more significantly, and for those reasons, I wouldn't want to change a thing. All of his thoughts, actions, decisions, and flaws brought him to the exact point in the story that he was supposed to be at the time.

What would you change about him if you could?

  1. That all does make him believe so I don't think I would change any of that about him, but I agree, I wish he worked harder at school/

  2. Yup, I feel exactly the same way: I've always been beyond accepting of Harry's flaws. That's really what makes him real and believable as a hero!! And truly, it's what made me fall in love with him ♥ We feel like we can connect to him because in a similar situation, we'd probably feel the same way he does. I'll take Harry just the way he is :)

  3. It isn't the parts of the whole that make up why we as readers love Harry. He isn't perfect and he doesn't want to be a hero some of the time. That's what makes him a good guy and a good character. He isn't in it for the glory. He is stumbling through life like the rest of us. So I wouldn't change a thing.

  4. Yeah I wouldn't change a thing either to be honest. Though if I could change one thing about the movies I would make them add Peeves. Made me sad when they left him out of every movie.

I agree with you, but sometimes I was so so mad, he could have at least listened to Ron and Hermione (mostly her), and consider their thoughts. He was just so stubborn, that's not good. He made me really pissed sometimes. :X
And I know that makes him more real and so, and I can totally get behind that, but he was still making me angry with his rash actions.

  9. I've never really thought much about Harry's flaws; they were just a part of him, and like everyone's said, they're what made him such a believable character. One thing I do wish is that he'd been able to stick with his Occlumency lessons, but then again, Snape did taunt Harry terribly and pushed him wayyy beyond his breaking point.

  10. You're right, it's his flaws that make him such a great and memorable character; It's what makes all of the characters great. I don't think I would want to change anything about any of the characters.
Hahaha, I didn't realize until you listed all of them how many faults he had. It kind of puts his character in perspective.

  11. Love his flaws because yes, they make them who he is and make me root for him! This may be cheating but If i could change one thing from Movie Harry (since I think Book Harry is perfection) it'd be to be a lot less stubborn/angry lol

I didn't think to look at Harry as a character, I answered it as what would I change as a series. But I like the way you interpreted the question and I agree with you. All of his flaws make him the character we know and love. :)

  13. I wouldn't change anything. His flaws are what makes him Harry - and real. My kids also agree - although Berk had trouble getting through #5 because she wanted to smack him. ;)

  14. Yes! That's exactly why I love Harry. He is so very human. So very much an 'everyman' and I loved that he has his flaws too. Great answer :)

  15. LOL Right. He was so lazy in school.

I love comments and read every one of them! Since they are an award in themselves, this is an award-free blog. Thank you though for the consideration!
