Sidekick Showcase [56] - Giveth and Taketh Away

Sidekick Showcase, previously known as Sidekick Saturday, is a weekly bookish meme, hosted here by Jaclyn at JC's Book Haven. There are many secondary characters that are as great as the primaries. In some cases, the sidekicks actually steal the show and you like them better than the heroine or hero. Maybe they didn't have enough page time for how great they were. Anyone can play along! I will post my Sidekicks on Saturday, then whichever day during the week that you would like to post yours, you can put your link in on my page. Just do the following:

• Choose a sidekick *or someone other than the hero or heroine* that you would like to put in the spotlight that fits in the week's topic
• Share a picture (if you can) and information about the character
• Give the title and author of a book the character can be found in
• Please don't include too many spoilers when describing why the character is such a great sidekick
• The day of your post, put your link in below and grab the code for your post so you can see the others that post their's throughout the week as well

January 4th - Party-Animal

I hope everyone had a fantastic Christmas! I had such a great one. I am still trying to catch up on emails and everything though.

My choice is Professor Minerva McGonagall
Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling

Professor Minerva McGonagall picture created by Jaclyn Canada

I couldn't do a Christmas themed month without including Harry Potter. Every time Christmas rolls around, I get nostalgic for the HP movies. I'm guessing it's because of the score to the films, or the fact that each one has a Christmas scene in it filled with floating candles and magic. I chose Professor McGonagall because I think about gifts when I think about her. She gave Harry his first racing broom and a spot on the Quidditch team. I love this part of the story because it shows her love for the game and also takes away from the imposing, strict teacher persona she has. Later in the series though, Harry receives another racing broom and she immediately takes it away from him. There's someone after Harry so she's worried that since it was sent anonymously that the broom could be spelled to hurt him. Harry doesn't approve naturally of losing the best broom on the market to have it checked out for spells. McGonagall is loyal, smart, powerful, and she also turns into a cat. What's not to love?

“Well, usually when a person shakes their head,” said McGonagall coldly, “they mean ‘no.’ So unless Miss Edgecombe is using a form of sign language as yet unknown to humans...”

“Bad news, Harry. I've just been to see Professor McGonagall about the Firebolt. She – er, got a bit shirty with me. Told me I'd got my priorities wrong. Seemed to think I cared more about winning the Cup than I do about staying alive. Just because I told her I didn't care if it threw you off, as long as you caught the Snitch first.”

“Harry witnessed Professor McGonagall walking right past Peeves who was determinedly loosening a crystal chandelier and could have sworn he heard her tell the poltergeist out of the corner of her mouth 'It unscrews the other way.”

“He will not be single-handed!” said Professor McGonagall loudly, plunging her hand inside her robes.
“Oh yes he will, Minerva!” said Dumbledore sharply. “Hogwarts needs you!”

  1. I love her so much! It's hard to see her in any other role!!

  2. Love Minerva. And that is an AMAZING picture.

  3. I love Maggie Smith in this role, she is perfect!

  4. Omygosh! I love Professor McGonagal, she is so what made HP worth it for me! :)

  5. Great choice, Jaclyn :) I hope you have enjoyed a nice, peaceful Christmas surrounded by family and loved ones :)

I'm sorry I haven't participated in the Sidekick Showcase these past couple of weeks, exams and travelling kind of stopped me, as I had spent quite a lot of time making sure I'd have reviews lined up for when I didn't have time. I will be back next week, though - promise :)

We spent a few days in Norway for Christmas, and when we left, my oldest son stayed. He is going to school there for a year, and also play hockey for a new team. It's very exciting, but it was really sad to say goodbye. :(

    Happy reading, my friend. *hugs*

  6. Love it! I adore Professor McGonagall, Jaclyn! And she does make you think of gifts. And I love your drawing, too. I was wondering if you'd pick a character from HP for this month. I almost chose Hagrid - as Santa-y and jolly!

I'm glad to hear your Christmas was wonderful, Jaclyn! I took a few days off from the blog, so I'm trying to catch up as well. ;) Here's to a fabulous 2014, my dear! *cheers*

  7. I ended up posting a Sidekick post anyway today - better late than never, right? *hugs*

  8. Awwe <3 thanks so much. I wasn't feeling too spiffy when I was doing that picture so I really appreciate that!!

  9. It really is :D She will always be Professor McGonagall to me too. I think some of my favorite overall moments had to be her back and forths with Umbridge. She was really great at putting her in her place.

  10. Absolutely perfect :D I agree! Thanks so much for stopping by.

  11. Such a fantastic character :D I'm glad you love her as much as I do! Thanks so much for stopping by.

  12. I'm pretty sure that it zoomed into Professor McGonagall in the movie and had a note from her with the broom but honestly, I'm not 100% sure since I get the books and movies confused sometimes. Aren't they such great movies to watch this time of year? Thank you so much!! I was so tired and crappy feeling while drawing it so I appreciate it. I have been enjoying the holidays though a lot. It's such a special and magical time of year :D

  13. Norway for Christmas sounds like a lot of fun and hockey has always really intrigued me. I'm so sorry that you had to say goodbye though, that definitely couldn't have been easy.

Life just gets hectic sometimes, and I will always understand that. I've been missing on here a few days myself and it's been a couple of weeks since I've had a review up. I've got to get myself back on track :D I hope you've done well on your exams!! *hugs*

  14. Ahh Hagrid is an excellent choice for Jolly! Why didn't I think of that?? LOL I had to take a couple of days off this weekend. The holidays and sicknesses just caught up with me and I needed a bit of a break. I'm really looking forward to an excellent year :D

  15. I love your choice! I actually haven't read the Harry Potter series (just the first and last book lol), but I did watch a few of the movies, and she is pretty awesome. :) (Even though for me, Maggie Smith will always be the older version of Wendy lol.)

Happy New Years and God bless!

  16. That's so great! I love how actors/actresses will always be a character in a person's mind. Thank you so much for stopping by :D Happy New Years and God Bless to you!!

  17. Did she give Harry the broom in the movie version because I totally missed that? I remember Harry getting the Nimbus 2000, but I don't remember solving the mystery behind the gifter. I broke out the HP movies this year too. They always have the big Christmas break with the snowy scenes. Your picture is perfect! The set of her mouth and that look in her eyes, I feel scolded just looking at her! I hope you're getting some time to relax and take in the holiday season. I know you love this time of year!!

  18. Oooh, you're more than welcome I'm excited to have stopped by and chatted with you. I need to do this more often. She's a fantastic character, really. :)
