Sidekick Showcase [53] - Sleigh Driver

Sidekick Showcase, previously known as Sidekick Saturday, is a weekly bookish meme, hosted here by Jaclyn at JC's Book Haven. There are many secondary characters that are as great as the primaries. In some cases, the sidekicks actually steal the show and you like them better than the heroine or hero. Maybe they didn't have enough page time for how great they were. Anyone can play along! I will post my Sidekicks on Saturday, then whichever day during the week that you would like to post yours, you can put your link in on my page. Just do the following:

• Choose a sidekick *or someone other than the hero or heroine* that you would like to put in the spotlight that fits in the week's topic
• Share a picture (if you can) and information about the character
• Give the title and author of a book the character can be found in
• Please don't include too many spoilers when describing why the character is such a great sidekick
• The day of your post, put your link in below and grab the code for your post so you can see the others that post their's throughout the week as well

December Themes are Christmas related. Your choice! Something like jolly, giving, Angels, Elves, Grinches, Santa-Like, etc. You can choose anyone you feel that is somehow related to a Christmas theme each week in December. There's a lot of freedom there, but if you have any questions, just let me know.

My choice is Artemis
Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan

Artemis picture created by Jaclyn Canada

So Artemis popped in my head because this goddess drives a chariot across the night sky and it is even compared to Santa's sleigh in the book. She can look however she would like, but she chooses to often appear the same age as her "Hunters" which are a group of young maidens that have sworn off men and live a life of hunting. She is the twin to Apollo who is "so hot" which is in sharp contrast to what appears to be her cold nature even though by the end of the series the reader finds out that this goddess may just be the one who has the highest regard for mortals and will go to extreme lengths to keep her people safe. She is the goddess of the hunt, the moon, chastity, animals, and the wilderness.

Quotes:

“Brother,” Artemis chided. “You do not help my Hunters. You do not look at, talk to, or flirt with my Hunters. And you do not call them sweetheart.”

“Stars," she whispered. "I can see the stars again, my lady."
A tear trickled down Artemis's cheek. "Yes, my brave one. They are beautiful tonight."

“Boys are usually forbidden to have any contact with the Hunters. The last one to see this camp…” She looked at Zoe. “Which one was it?”
That boy in Colorado,” Zoe said. “You turned him into a jackalope.”
Ah, yes.” Artemis nodded, satisfied. “I enjoy making jackalopes…”

“Number eight, the silver one, belongs to Artemis. She vowed to be a maiden forever. So of course, no kids. The cabin is, you know, honorary. If she didn't have one, she'd be mad.”

“Artemis must be present at the solstice," Zoe said. "She has been the most vocal on the council, arguing for taking action against Kronos's minions. If she is not there, the gods will decide nothing. We will lose another year of war preparations."

Are you sugesting the gods have trouble acting together, young lady?" Dionysis asked.

Yes, Lord Dionysis."

Mr.D nodded. "Just checking. Your right, of course. Carry on.”

  1. I love where you went with this theme, Jaclyn! Artemis is an excellent choice. And, as always, I love how you've drawn her. :)

My SS post will be late today - I'm on my way to a holiday craft fair, where I'm selling my crafts as a fundraiser for band. ;) I've been crafting like a madwoman these past few days! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

I think you're one of the only ones that is familiar with this series so I'm glad you like my choice :D

  3. I watched the movie, but you told me the first one takes its own direction. I'm totally lost on this month's sidekick challenge! I love the drawing, Jaclyn.

  4. Thank you :D Do you know any good Angels or Elves? Really this month is about interpretation. Just anything you feel fits with some sort of a Christmas theme. For instance, I know you are a Sookie fan so Claudine could be considered a guardian angel even though she's a fairy.

  5. I didn't go with Claudine because an obvious pick suddenly came to me. Next week I'll be stumped all over again!

  11. I haven't watch the movie and I haven't read the books, but I like the concepts from what you describe. Artemis is one of the twelve Greek mythology Gods, called Olympians. Sounds like an interesting book.

    Thanks for sharing. :D

I love comments and read every one of them! Since they are an award in themselves, this is an award-free blog. Thank you though for the consideration!
