Sunday Cover Scramble [154]

Let's have some fun! I am going to post covers on here every Sunday that are scrambled up graphically, making it hard to tell what cover it is. I would like your guesses on what cover you think I've posted. I won't answer you until I'm posting the next one to let you know if you are right, allowing others to guess as well. Some will be hard, and others may be easy. Let me know in the comments if you'd like some more hints and I'll offer some more if no one guesses it correctly.

I am pulling covers off the Most Popular Page on Goodreads.

Harry Potter Moment of the Week [97]

This is a meme hosted by Uncorked Thoughts and Lunar Rainbows. The idea is to share a favorite moment, magical item, character, spell, quote, object from the books, films or J.K.Rowling herself! Click the links to the blogs to see how to join up &  upcoming topics.

What Do You Think Your Best Subject Would Be? Not Necessarily Your Favorite But the One You Think You'd Be Best At.

My logic may not make sense to everyone, but I feel like I love McGonagall so much that I'd want to make her proud. So, I'm going with Transfiguration. I believe I'd do well in most of the classes, but I feel some would come easily to me so I may not try as hard as I would in Transfiguration. Are we doing worst class? I know what that one would be too!

Review: Iron Night (Generation V #2) by M.L. Brennan

Published: January 7, 2014 by Roc
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Format: ebook
Source: Purchased
Goodreads Summary

Underemployed by day. Undead by night.

Underachieving film theory graduate and vampire Fortitude Scott may be waiting tables at a snooty restaurant run by a tyrannical chef who hates him, but the other parts of his life finally seem to be stabilizing. He's learning how to rule the Scott family territory, hanging out more with his shapeshifting friend Suzume Hollis, and has actually found a decent roommate for once.

Until he finds his roommate’s dead body.

The Scott family cover-up machine swings into gear, but Fort is the only person trying to figure out who (or what) actually killed his friend. His hunt for a murderer leads to a creature that scares even his sociopathic family, and puts them all in deadly peril.

Keeping secrets, killing monsters, and still having to make it to work on time? Sometimes being a vampire really sucks.

"Ah, compartmentalization - my old friend."

The Good

This was a great follow up to Generation V. Fortitude Scott is the youngest of 3 vampire siblings. They each are progressively nicer as they get younger, and we find out why this is. I loved the more in depth look at the Scott family and how Fort came to be basically human while transitioning into a vampire.

I laugh a lot while reading this series. Brennan is great at not only weaving together a believable story with incredibly interesting supernatural elements, but also with making the characters relatable when they really shouldn't be.

My absolute favorite part of this series is the kitsune, Suzume. Her and Fort together on the page is a blend of wit and sexual tension and I love it.

Fort has grown a lot since the first one as well and I just enjoy watching that evolution. The story in Iron Night is about Fort trying to find whoever killed his roommate...right after he finally found one that he meshes well with. It was a unique and interesting journey. So this mystery/thriller aspect is entwined well with the UF universe she has built.

The Bad

There's no complaints for me with this.

The Romance

Fort meets a half-elf that he gets along very well with and you can see the chemistry. They are quite a lot alike. However, Suze and Fort have more chemistry and undeniable tension so it's fun to watch it play out.

Conclusion

A great story. There is a good dramatic mystery to sort out while learning a great deal more about this world that Brennan has made with vampires and more supernatural critters. The writing flows smoothly and there is wit and humor all throughout. I love the characters and have fun watching them grow. Recommended for Urban Fantasy fans.

Excerpts

"Think hard on what she values."
I considered it, then said slowly, "She doesn't value her own life."
Prudence nodded again, pleased. "Precisely. True fanatics do not. So come in, Fortitude, and force her to talk by threatening what she does hold dear."

I'm closer than I used to be, though. Four months ago I'd started the transition into vampire adulthood, but instead of a cake or some bar mitzvah bonds, I'd gotten an increased role in the family business of keeping a solid chunk of the Eastern seaboard thoroughly under the control of our mother, Madeline Scott.

"Damn it, Suze, he stole the freaking napkin. You do this on purpose every time. Get them all riled and worked up, and then I've brought the coffee and they have to walk out of here, so they grab the napkin to provide a visual block." She gave me a very smug look. "Do not look that proud," I scolded. "That's not nice to do to any guy."
"Are you saying that on behalf of your gender, or" - she swept her gaze downward - "are you speaking from more personal experience?"
"I'm immune to you now," I said, picking up the pile of plates and stomping off to the kitchen. Not fast enough, because I could hear her taunting, disbelieving laugh behind me. She was right. I wasn't immune at all.

Would you rather have Potions with Snape or tea with Umbridge?

Potions class seems like a fun one to me, but then I'm a stickler for details so I feel like I'd do well there. And even if Snape makes snide remarks and occasionally makes Harry's potions disappear, he doesn't do it as often as you know he'd like to. RIP Alan Rickman.

Umbridge, however, would make me want to use unforgivable curses often. I would have as hard a time as Harry did keeping my temper around this woman.

Quick Review: Sweet Temptation (The Sweet Trilogy #4) by Wendy Higgins

Published: September 8, 2015 by HarperTeen
Genre: YA, Paranormal, Fantasy, Romance
Format: ebook
Source: Purchased
Goodreads Summary

Bad boy Kaidan Rowe has never wanted for anything—money, popularity, musical talent…hot girls—but seducing them is part of his duty as a Nephilim, slave to the demon Dukes. As the son of the Duke of Lust, Kaidan has learned his father’s ways, becoming a master of passion, a manipulator of chemistry. Disobeying his father would mean certain death. Thankfully for Kaidan, he’s good at his job. And he enjoys it.

Until he meets Anna Whitt—sweet, smart, feisty, and inexplicably good—the one girl seemingly immune to his charms. The daughter of a guardian angel and a fallen one, she has a certain power over him, one that makes him wish for more than he could ever deserve.

Determined to save all the Neph from their dark lives as the influencers of sin, Anna joins forces with Kaidan to overcome the demons’ oppressive ways. In the light of her affections, Kaidan must undergo his toughest test of all, a battle of the heart.

Sensual and swoon worthy, this companion volume to the acclaimed Sweet Evil series from New York Times bestselling author Wendy Higgins, told from the perspective of the irresistibly sexy and mysterious Kaidan Rowe, gives readers revealing insights into his struggle, his intense connection to Anna, and most of all, the true emotions that drive him.

Author Note:
Sweet Temptation will encompass the entire trilogy in a condensed version, beginning with Kai's life before he met Anna, and taking readers through the epilogue of Sweet Reckoning. Sweet Temptation is a companion novel, not meant to be a stand alone story. It will definitely be a richer experience for those who have read the original trilogy.

"I am confused. I don't enjoy being confused."

This one is a companion book told from the POV of Kaidan Rowe. It's his view of the entire 3 books in the series all rolled into this one.

This is a great treat for those that have already read the series. If you enjoy getting the same experience through another pair of eyes, it's definitely worth it. His brain is pretty much the opposite of our girl Anna. Her's is all Southern sweet charm and his are the British dirty grit. His thoughts are much, much more naughty. It's also fun to get to see experiences that happened when Anna was nowhere around. During quite a bit of the trilogy they were apart, so there are quite a few new scenes that were never covered in the trilogy.

Excerpts

The bloke takes Anna into a room and closes them in. It sounds as if they're climbing onto the bed. My heart is beating faster than normal, and there's a sour feeling when I swallow. I don't feel right. This night doesn't feel right.

"It wouldn't take much for you to be more, I don't know, popular or whatever...I mean, you're pretty, but you could be, like, hot. You know?" Damn. Burn. Is he serious? She sounds inexplicably sweet, not offended, when she responds. "I'm sorry, Scott, but even if I had the money I just don't care about those things. I want people to like me for who I am. Isn't that what you want to?"

Anna takes off running and I watch her go. She's got nice form. And a great arse.

Fandom Mashups [9]

Fandom Mashups is a feature hosted by Lunar Rainbows Reviews. There's a different scenario each week, and you choose a "dream team" of five characters from five different fandoms whom you think are best suited for the situation.

This week's topic is:
You've decided to start a band - you know, because you rock and it's time the whole world knew it! Which characters do you want in your band?

1) Kaidan Rowe - The Sweet Trilogy

Oh Kai. The son of the Duke of Lust.

“I noticed several things about the drummer all at once. He was focused on the task at hand, keeping perfect rhythm. Instead of a swirl of transparent colors around his torso, there was a small, concentrated starburst of bright red at his sternum. But otherwise his aura was blank. Huh. That was strange. But before I could contemplate it too much, my eyes landed on his face.
Wowza.
He was smokin' hot. As in H-O-T-T hot. I'd never understood until that moment why girls insisted on adding an extra T. This guy was extra-T worthy.
I examined the drummer, determined to find a flaw.
Brown hair. An interesting haircut: short around the sides and back, but longer on top, hanging loose and angling across his forehead. His eyes were narrow and his eyebrows were a bit thick and...Oh, who was I kidding? I could pick him apart, but even the shifty slant of his eyes made him more alluring to me.”

2) Cole Stockton - Everneath

Cole plays lead guitar for the band the Dead Elvises. He can make his audience feel whatever emotion he'd like through his music. It'd be an interesting experience.

3) Goblin King - The Labyrinth

Lead singer. RIP David Bowie.

4) Hermione Granger - Harry Potter

OK so she may not be the best piano player ever, but I'd love having her in my band.

5) Simon Lewis - The Mortal Instruments

His band name changed nearly every week, but he was an excellent bassist. It looks like in the new show Shadowhunters, they've made it into a two-person band with him playing acoustic guitar instead.

Who would be on your dream team this week?
